A couple of us are interested in getting a book club started for teens. We did this last year for a bit and I had a great time. I don't have a meeting place settled for sure, but if enough people are interested we'll meet at the First Church of the Nazarene on 1000 road on (or around) the first Wednesday of each month from 2:30-4:00. Band will begin on September 9th. Mr. Swischer will audition kids on August 26th that want to be in the intermediate or advanced level this year. Beginning level doesn't audition. If you need audition information but didn't get the email, please let me know.
All levels of band will meet on Friday mornings at Hume Music Store.
Beginning - 9am Intermediate - 10am Advanced - 9:45
Orchestra will meet at the following days and times at Hume Music Store:
Beginning - Mondays at 2:30 - we need more kids in order to have this level Intermediate - Tuesdays at 3:30 - new kids are welcome - audition required
Choir will meet on Friday mornings at Hume Music Store at 11 am. If there are enough kids to break them into levels, there will be two groups - one meeting at 11am the other meeting at noon.
I am sorry for the delay in the final decision concerning days and times. Mr. Swischer wasn't able to work in a third level this year as originally planned. The advanced level will have a different director for this year.
All groups have a tuition of $90.00 per semester. We are asking that each family pay $5.00 towards the administration costs that come up during the year. This money will go toward photocopying, music, and any supplies that are needed by the directors. This is a once-a-year fee, per family, not per member.
Mr. Swischer, Mrs. Schellman, Mr. Gaskin, and Mrs. Hamel look forward to working with the kids this year.

Chess Mates Homeschool Chess Club will resume meetings in October. We would like to hear from families about their availability to meet on a weekday – preferably in the afternoon. As it stands now, we plan to meet on Tuesday evenings at Christ Covenant Church – 2312 Harvard Rd – from 7 – 8pm. The change to a daytime meeting may not work out in the end, but we are looking into it. I know that we WOULD NOT meet on Tuesday afternoons because of TLC – other days/times will need to be cleared with the church we meet at. Chess club dues will be the same as last year - $1.00 per member – each time you attend. We give a portion to the church as a love offering for the use of the building. The rest goes toward supplies that benefit the club. We hope to purchase a few chess clocks for those members that want to prepare for chess tournaments. I am in contact with the Wellsville area homeschool chess club about doing some group ordering on clocks. We might have enough to purchase two or three clocks if we can get a good price. They are also interested in having a tournament with us. Please feel free to call or email me with questions or to sign up. It is nice to have an idea of how many might be attending so we are prepared with enough tables, boards, etc. However, we won’t turn away any “drop-ins” :o) Hope to hear from all the kids who participated last year and new ones as well. Many have asked if Spanish will be offered in Lawrence this year. Although the primary site for these classes is Topeka, there is now a possibility that we may be able to have classes at Community Bible Church on Thursday afternoons.
However, there will need to be a minimum of 6-8 students to form any given class. The attached flyer provides additional information about the classes.

There seems to be a renewed interest in seeing a homeschool choir started. There will need to be a minimum number of students signed up before this group can become a reality. Perhaps a jr/sr high group could be formed if there is enough interest. At this point I have a list that has kids with a variety of ages.
There will be tuition for this group, paid by the semester. A director would need to be paid for his/her time spent during rehearsals as well as preparation time. There will also be music to purchase, and money spent on an accompanist. I would look for this group to perform at the Christmas and Spring Recital that the band and orchestra has, as well as possible trips to a nursing homes, etc.
I know it is hard to commit to an activity without knowing all the details, day/time, etc… but I would like to hear from families that have a sincere interest in seeing this group formed and would sign up if it fits into your schedule. |
