Honor Society Membership PDF Print E-mail

In November of 2003, a local chapter of the National Homeschool Honor Society (Eta Sigma Alpha) was formed in Lawrence. This local chapter, Phi Gamma Chapter, is sponsored by TEACH. "The purpose of the local chapter is to recognize and encourage scholarship among homeschool high school students. To achieve this purpose, the society shall provide opportunities for the development of leadership and service. Therefore the group will elect officers amongst themselves to plan and implement various types of service projects throughout the year."

During the first year, the students helped to flesh out the local requirements and to establish officers. They also helped to clean and provide a meal at a local homeless shelter and collected cell phones that were then donated to a battered women's shelter. Last year the group collected care packages for about 55 troops deployed overseas and also collected food to help stock the shelves of a local group that hands out food to needy families.

Phi Gamma Chapter is looking for new members for the following school year. The mandatory requirements are as follows:
1) Student must be in high school and meet one of the following test scores:

90% composite score on Stanford, California or Iowa Achievement Tests
SAT score of 1800
ACT score of 26
PSAT score of 120 (add the math and verbal score together)
2) Current GPA (3.5 grade point average on a four-point scale required)
3) Two letters of recommendation and a short statement about themselves.
4) Meet with the group to plan and implement some service project.

Remember that universities are looking for more than academic performance! These institutions like to see involvement in extra curricular activities, offices held, and volunteer/service projects the students have performed throughout their high school experience. Scholarships are most often awarded to students that demonstrate not only academic success but also leadership potential. Colleges will look for the student's involvement!

If you have a student that qualifies for membership, please contact Cathy Barfield at 785-843-9207 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to receive an application. The applications are due September 15th so that the group may have its elections at the October meeting.

The following activities are planned for the jr/sr homeschooling social group.  If you have any questions contact Martha Bachert or Lisa McFarland.

All the activities planned are for homeschooler’s in either junior or senior high. Your homeschooling friends are invited to these events so if you know of someone that would like to attend – please forward this information to them.

We have other activities on the “back burner” for the future.  We hope to have a movie night, bowling, and perhaps a winter formal/night out.  We need the support of other parents to make these plans a success.  If you are willing to host/plan/sponsor a monthly event, we love to hear from you.
