Pony Express Festival set to ride again

The 20th annual Pony Express Festival will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. a week from today at the Hollenberg Station Historic Site near Hanover.

There will be historical demonstrations, including catapult and other weapons, a blacksmith and a quick draw competition. The Turkey Creek Regulators will do target shooting on horseback.

A 11 a.m., a nondenominational church service will take place with a circuit rider preacher. A community choir will sing at the service. Everyone is invited to join in the choir.

Lunch, catered by Ricky's Cafe in Hanover, will be served on the grounds. The meal is $6 for adults and $3.50 for children. A lemonade stand with pie and ice cream will be available.

There will be live music during the lunch hour. Afternoon entertainment will include the Kramer Sisters, of Crete, Neb., doing harmony vocal with banjo, guitar and accordion.

Terry Lane Fitzgerald, of the Lincoln, Neb., area, will portray Buffalo Bill Cody on the stage and around the grounds during the day. The Fresh Green Grass, Minihan family, also will entertain.

The highlight of the day will be the re-ride of the Pony Express at 3 p.m. with the mochila envelope exchange at the Hollenberg Station. Following the exchange, there will be a drawing for a hand-quilted, queen-sized quilt, with tickets available for $1. Collector buttons will be available for $2 on the grounds the day of the festival.

The festival is sponsored by Friends of Hollenberg Station and the Kansas State Historical Society.

Hollenberg Station is four miles north of the US-36 highway and K-148 highway junction and one mile east on K-243, or one-half mile north of Hanover on K-148 and one mile east on K-243.
