Dear Friends, Sorry I have not set up a meeting for this year's co-op called TLC sooner. The planning meeting for all families who wish to participate in TLC will be Saturday, September 10th at Community Bible Church from 9-11 am. It is important that you be there since we will be planning the school year. I also need everyone who wishes to participate, to contact me immediately even though you may have dome this before, plans and circumstances change for each family. I need to gather who is returning and who is new to make sure there will be room in the group for the new people.
For those who do not know much about TLC, please let me explain: TLC is a learning group in Lawrence under TEACH (Teaching Effective Academics in Christian Homes). The purpose is to get together with other homeschooling families on a weekly basis to learn through units and hands-on activities. We meet every Tuesday afternoon during October, November, and January through April from 12:45 pm - 3:00 pm at Community Bible Church, 904 N 1464 Road (just west of Lawrence off Highway K-10 near the intersection with N 1500 Road). The kids are broken into about 4-5 groups for learning and they will rotate from a unit time (1 hour), a music time (30 minutes), and a rotation class (P.E. or Arts and Crafts for 30 minutes).TLC is open to students from K- 6th grade with a preschool and nursery provided for younger kids. Mothers are asked to stay on the premises even though they may not have a duty for the month. Most moms find this an enjoyable time getting to fellowship with other moms. Mothers will be required to help and teach in many different areas throughout the year. Each month there is a fee to reimburse any of the teachers for expenses needed to teach. The fees for this coming year are yet to be determined (last year they ran $9 for one child K-6 and $15 for two or more children K-8). TLC is a co-op where all mothers participate and most are involved at some point in some form of instruction. Each mother will be expected to sign both a signed commitment form to enter the group as well as a statement of faith. I have enclosed this form as an attachment for you to see ahead of time. In the past there has been much interest in the group and openings may become restricted if the group becomes too large. Please call Cathy at 843-9207 or e-mail her at

to let her know of your interest and to assist in her planning for this coming year. Below is an announcement regarding an English class for junior high students during the TLC co-op time. This class is separate from TLC but will run at the same time to make it convenient for those with junior high kids and elementary age kids. The writing class is a year long class that will be taught by John Gaskin. There will be a class fee to be paid to John (not TLC) for the time and commitment he will be putting into the class. You will need to contact John immediately if you wish to participate since there will be a class size limit. Also is an announcement about a speech club for junior high kids as well (although 6th graders may participate. This will need to start in September so please contact John or Pamela below. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ JUNIOR HIGH ENGLISH OFFERED DURING TLC TIMES John Gaskin will be teaching a two-semester junior high English course at Community Bible Church on Tuesdays from 1-2 p.m. The class will begin with a review of good sentence structure by learning to diagram sentences. Next, the class will discover how to write a good paragraph before tackling essay writing. The final project will be the completion of a research paper. The cost is $30 a month. SPEECH CLUB FOR JUNIOR HIGH STUDENTS The number one fear according to numerous studies is the fear of public speaking. Out of a desire to help kids learn to have fun speaking in front of others, Pam Landon and John Gaskin are forming a speech club for students grades 6-8. During the month of September, the group will meet on Friday afternoons from 1:30-3:30. and then beginning with TLC, the group will meet the second hour of TLC on Tuesdays and from 1:30-3:00 on Fridays Kick-off for the class will be Friday Sept. 9 from 1:30-3:30 at Community Bible Church. Each participant is encouraged to bring a short children's story or fairy tale to read. The Tuesday classes will be a time of instruction and the Friday sessions are a speech lab where students will work on their presentations. Students will learn humorous and dramatic interpretative speeches as well as the more traditional persuasive and expository style of speaking. Because there is a textbook, it is necessary to pre-register by contacting Pam Landon or John Gaskin. The costs will include the textbook, a small fee for copying and use of the church (Total price around $40). In addition, students will be expected to participate in some area speech tournaments and will need to pay their own entry fees (often about $10 a speech). The first class is Friday, Sept. 9th. All classes will be at the Community Bible Church. To register or for more information please contact Pam at
